No One Should Return to Allah Alone: Hundreds Unite to Honour Ali Alshmari

When Ali Alshmari — a young Iraqi man who came to the UK chasing a better life — was tragically murdered in Birmingham, he had no family here to stand by his side. Iqbal & Sons Bereavement Services, together with the wider Muslim community, ensured he was never truly alone. Hundreds gathered to give him the dignified farewell every soul deserves.

A Life Cut Short Far From Home

Ali Alshmari, 30, arrived in the United Kingdom from Iraq in 2025 carrying hope in his heart. The youngest child in his family — a family who had already endured the loss of their father — Ali came to study, to work hard, and to make those he loved proud. On 3rd March 2026, that dream was cut short when he was fatally stabbed on Bridge Road in Alum Rock, Birmingham. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had no family in the United Kingdom. In the immediate aftermath of his death, as police launched a murder investigation, a question arose — who would ensure this brother was laid to rest with the dignity he deserved?

The Ummah Steps Forward

Iqbal & Sons Bereavement Services — a charity providing dignified Muslim funerals for those in need — immediately took on the responsibility, launching a fundraising appeal to cover the full costs of burial. The response from the community was overwhelming.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral prayers, standing together to ensure Ali was not alone on his final journey. Although he had no family present, he was surrounded by a community that cared enough to honour him with dignity, prayers, and respect. It was a powerful reminder of one of Islam’s most profound principles: in our faith, no believer is ever truly alone — when a Muslim passes with no family or relatives, the Ummah becomes their family and stands in their place.

"Every soul deserves to be laid to rest with honour. No Muslim should ever return to Allah alone."

A Community United in Compassion

The funeral and burial of Ali Alshmari was made possible through the generosity and coordination of many individuals and organisations. Iqbal & Sons extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who donated, volunteered, and supported the effort. Special thanks are owed to:

  • Rita – Trinity Funeral Services

Your kindness and generosity ensured he was given the dignified farewell every human being deserves. May Allah reward your compassion abundantly, and may Ali’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Our Commitment: A Duty, Not a Business

At Iqbal & Sons, we believe the care of the deceased is not a commercial transaction. It is a duty. It is a trust. It is Fi Sabilillah — done solely for the pleasure of Allah. It is Fard Kifayah: a communal obligation that falls upon all of us. We honour every Muslim’s funeral and burial with dignity, compassion, and the respect they deserve — as if they were never alone.

If you would like to support our work, or require our bereavement services, please do not hesitate to reach out. Together, we ensure no member of our community faces their final journey alone.
